“Mr. President, what’cha doin’ for my residents/Mr. Minister why you being sinister.” Nas is always on the prowl for making a statement but he seems to execute his most powerful one alongside Damian “Jr Gong” Marley in the first full album collaboration between a reggae and hip hop artist. I know what you’re thinking: it’s probably just Nas and Damian’s voices thrown on some reggae dubs. Surprisingly, the album was recorded with a live band that was able to keep up with the strong versatility among the two genres. Distant Relatives – mostly produced by Damian and Stephen Marley – bridges current US and African despair and exalts the need of unity throughout mankind. And with the help of Lil Wayne, Joss Stone, Stephen Marley, K’naan and Dennis Brown, the duo will be sending proceeds of album sales to help build a school in the Congo. If you’ve yet to purchase tickets for the May 25 show at the Fox Theater, I suggest you do it before it’s too late. This historical opportunity will only be coming to Oakland once around.
